Kamala Beach nightlife, restaurants, hotels, shopping

Kamala- 3 minutes south of Laem Singh and 10-15 minutes north of Patong , is this once quiet sleepy Muslim village. Kamala consists of a big valley with a nice half moon shaped beach fronting the Andaman Sea. Over the last 5-8 years this whole area has gone from a quiet, no stop lights sleepy village into a bustling vibrant area. To the south of Kamala overlooking the beach is an area known as Millionaires Mile where there are a lot of nice villas overlooking Kamala and the Andaman Sea. Just inland from the main road that goes through Kamala is one of Phuket’s most famous attractions, Phuket FantaSea.

In regards to the beach itself, this is a nice long 3 km stretch in length and is very similar to other western facing beaches in Phuket with clean white sand and clear blue water. The entire beach is sheltered by casuarina trees. During the high season, various water sports such as jet-skiing, water-skiing and para-sailing are available. Use extreme caution when swimming between May and October due to very strong rip tides.
During the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, Kamala was hit extremely hard and suffered many calamities. A few boats were found more than 1 km inland with quite a few trees and building being uprooted and move a considerable distance.

There is a reasonable amount of accommodation in Kamala, but in comparison to other beaches of this size, there is not as many choices. Some of the more popular places to stay are below.

Places to stay in Kamala-Kamala Beach Hotel and Resort, Sunwing Resort Phuket, The Courtyard Phuket at Kamala, Ayara Kamala Resort Phuket, and perhaps the ritziest and most expensive of them all, the Andara Resort.

Places to eat in Kamala- The southern end of Kamala beach has many beachfront restaurants and bars that serve seafood, Thai and International dishes. If you are on a budget there are also the hawker stalls that set up throughout the area, with good food at cheap prices. One of the more well known restaurants (and expensive) is Rockfish restaurant which is as the name implies, is on the rocks.

Nightlife in Kamala- The nightlife in Kamala in quiet in comparison to it’s southern neighbours, but there is enough nightlife to keep you happy if you don’t want the journey to and from Patong Over the past few years, a number of local bars have sprung up, mostly just right off the main road that runs through Kamala. The biggest attraction in Kamala, and one of the biggest attractions on the whole island is Phuket Fantasea, a show that goes through the history of Siam ( Thailand).

Shopping in Kamala-Kamala features many small mom and pop stalls that run the length of the main village road. The prices tend to be a bit higher than Patong as there is less competition than Patong, and the vendors know that many of the shoppers are more than happy to shop in the area they are staying in.
